Proper nutrition is key to a healthy pregnancy, but many have wondered if there are supplements that may also be beneficial in boosting fertility. Research has yet to uncover any concrete conclusions to prove that supplements can boost fertility; recent studies have shown positive correlations between vitamin intake and fertility. While there is still more research to be done on equating improved fertility with supplements, there are some vitamins and supplements that may have promising effects on fertility issues.

CoQ10

Coenzyme Q10 is a naturally occurring bodily substance that functions as an antioxidant and decreases the damaging effects of free radicals on the body. Because of the benefits CoQ10 has on various systems of the body, including the reproductive system, it has become available as a supplement for those with reduced levels of CoQ10. This supplement can be taken by men or women.

One factor that has been linked to reduced levels of CoQ10 is age. Fertilization and embryo development requires high energy levels, so when CoQ10 naturally diminishes within the body with age, there is less available to aid these processes. Studies have shown that men who take CoQ10 supplements had an increase in sperm quality and morphology. While there is less scientific backing for female fertility, a study linked CoQ10 with improved egg quality in mice. There is a lot of research necessary to draw conclusions between CoQ10 and enhanced fertility; the initial studies have been optimistic.

DHA

DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid and one of the primary components of fish oil. Supplementing diet with additional DHA has become popular in recent decades because of the potential benefits it has on brain development. DHA is recommended for expectant mothers as it may help increase birth weight in addition to being essential for infant brain growth and development. When it comes to fertility, studies have shown a potential link between omega-3 fatty acids and improved ovulation, egg quality, and ovarian reserve.

Folate

Folate is one of the top nutrients to take while pregnant as it is essential for many bodily processes, including red blood cell health, nerve function, and proper DNA formation. Folate has also been proven to protect against spinal cord defects. Folate consumption is the most beneficial in early stages of pregnancy, which is why it is recommended that any woman who could become pregnant take folate supplements. In addition to benefiting any early and potentially unknown pregnancy, folate may also benefit fertility. While there are no solid conclusions, folate supplementation has been associated with the improved success of fertility treatments.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a popular supplement taken to benefit immunity, heart health, muscle strength, and more. Because of its health benefits vitamin D, there is no harm in taking it even though there are no conclusions that can officially be made to prove that vitamin D benefits fertility. However, it’s worth mentioning that there have been potential associations between vitamin D deficiencies and fetal complications. While there is more research required to identify any possible link between infertility and low vitamin D levels, it’s a good idea to supplement vitamin D for your overall health, especially if you have a vitamin D deficiency.
