How da Vinci Robotic Surgery Can Improve Fertility

Robotic technology has shown some of the most promising and rapidly developing advancements over the last century. Not only can da Vinci robotic surgery improve fertility in some cases where medical conditions impede the ability to conceive, but there is continued potential to make significant breakthroughs in reproductive surgery and preservation of fertility. The da Vinci robotic surgery improves fertility by carrying out various procedures, including tubal reanastomosis, endometriosis surgery, ovarian cyst removal, and more. This blog provides detailed information about da Vinci robotic surgery and how this technology can improve fertility.

What is da Vinci Robotic Surgery?

According to a review published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, the da Vinci surgical system is a compact, electromechanical interface between the patient and the surgeon driven by advanced computer software. It comprises an ergonomically designed surgeon console, a patient-side cart with four interactive robotic arms, and a tenfold-magnified high-definition 3D vision system. One robotic arm connects to a camera and is directly controlled by the surgeon. By using the robotic arm, it ensures that the camera produces a stable and precise image. The other robotic arms mimic the human hand’s skill and dexterity and provide seven degrees of motion while eliminating any potential tremors present in a human hand. The da Vinci robotic system features allow the surgeon to perform highly complex surgeries and microsurgical procedures.

How da Vinci Robotic Surgery Can Improve Fertility

At Carolinas Fertility Institute, da Vinci robotic surgery is performed by our founder and renowned fertility expert, Dr. Yalcinkaya. This minimally invasive surgery may be recommended to women with conditions affecting their reproductive system, including:

  • Blocked fallopian tubes: In most cases, a blocked fallopian tube prevents the successful passage of the egg to the sperm or the fertilized egg to the uterus. Robotic surgery can treat this condition by removing blocked portions and then joining the tube’s two healthy ends.
  • Pelvic adhesions: Adhesions are bands of scar tissue that may cause internal organs to be stuck together when they are not supposed to be. The da Vinci surgery may be an option to perform a laparoscopy to view and remove the adhesions.
  • Endometriosis: Endometriosis is a common and severe gynecological disease that can cause infertility, and there is currently no cure. However, studies have shown that da Vinci robotic surgery can improve fertility in patients with minimal-to-mild endometriosis, laparoscopic ablation of endometriotic implants and adhesiolysis.
  • Tubal reanastomosis: Tubal reanastomosis is a commonly administered procedure for patients with blocked fallopian tubes and consists of removing blocked or diseased portions of the fallopian tube and then rejoining the healthy ends of the tube.
  • Uterine fibroids: Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths on the uterus that often appear during childbearing years. There are many ways that da Vinci robotic surgery can treat uterine fibroids, including robotic myomectomy or ablation.
  • Ovarian cysts: Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that appear inside or on the surface of the ovaries. A laparoscopy performed using robotic surgery can help find and remove ovarian cysts.

The Benefits of da Vinci Robotic Surgery

Minimally invasive procedures performed using the da Vinci robotic system have numerous advantages when compared to traditional methods. One of the benefits is better cosmetic results with less scarring due to smaller incisions. Other benefits include reduced tissue trauma, less bleeding, reduced postoperative pain, and a shorter recovery time. At CFI, we want you to get the best possible results while still being able to return to your normal life as soon as possible.
